Frequently asked questions

What is Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction?

This is a three dimensional approach to teaching and learning, moving away from teaching topics and facts at surface level, to deeper learning at the conceptual level. H. Lynne Erickson and Lois Lanning are behind Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction and I am an authorised trainer, having been trained by them and their team.

How long is a workshop?

Workshops vary in length from 90 minutes to more. The timings will be made clear to you when you book your place. These work around the demands of your daily life but also give time to delve deeper into education to help impact practice.

What can I expect in a workshop?

It will be a chance to learn something new, connect with like-minded colleagues, exchange ideas and learn together - as learning is indeed social. Depending on the session, we will examine theories, explore snapshots of practice and reflect upon what we see. I will draw upon my expertise gained around the world and together you will hopefully leave the workshops with practical ideas do implement in your classroom and plenty of desire to learn more.

Who are the workshops aimed at?

They are aimed at teachers from across a wide spectrum including those in early years and primary school settings. If you are new to teaching or have been an educator for decades like me, I have always embraced the lifelong learner attitude and  want to continuously develop my expertise for the benefit of those I teach. So please come along if you are new or indeed a veteran teacher as there is always something new to learn!

My Concept Based Learning workshop is a K-12 (Kindergarten to grade 12) workshop and is suitable for all.

How will you bring your International expertise to the workshops?

Having a wealth of experience across the world including in Hong Kong, New York, Dubai, Singapore and the United Kingdom my entire educational background has been based on international perspectives to teaching and learning. I will be drawing upon my experiences, sharing how my practice has evolved, the mistakes I have made and the realisations I have had, which will weave themselves into the workshops I deliver.

How are these workshops different to others available?

My workshops are tailored to early years and primary professionals, offered online, live from the UK. You will engage with me in real time as we reflect and refine our practice, whilst engaging the sharing ideas within our group. Whilst some parts are for listening and learning, other parts require participation and you are expected to share your thoughts and ideas. Research states that learning is social, so we should practice that as educators.

Will I get a certificate at the end of a workshop?

Yes, a certificate will be issued to you for the workshop you have attended indicating the number of hours of professional learning you have completed. If you complete the Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction workshop, you will get a different certificate as this is a 3 full day, bespoke training reflecting the work of Erickson and Lanning.

How are workshops delivered?

Workshops will be delivered online live, via Zoom. A link will be sent to you prior to the workshop beginning. You will not need a Zoom account, but you will need an steady and stable internet connection.

The Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction workshop can only be delivered in person, and is a 3 day course. Detail of when this is available will be shared in due course.

What do I need to bring with me for a workshop?

You will need a computer with am internet connection. As you will be engaging during the class, it is recommended that you sit somewhere quiet where you can do your professional learning. You should bring a note pad and pen if you wish to make any notes.

Would you be able to deliver training to larger groups from a particular school or organisation?

I would welcome the opportunity to engage with more educators, so please do contact me. I am a regular visitor to Sri Lanka and would be happy to deliver some training when I am there, or online.

Will you be delivering any professional development in person, in Sri Lanka?

This is indeed the hope! I an a regular visitor to Sri Lanka so I hope that I am able to run some workshops when I visit. I will keep you updated and would love to hear from you if you have any workshop preferences or anything specifically you would like to learn about.

I am keen to begin a career in International education overseas, what other services do you offer?

The workshops will certainly help you to understand how learning happens for children around the world, giving you insights into the best practices you can adopt. Whilst different countries around the world have different requirements for teachers, as well as different visa expectations which I am unable to help with, I am able to review your CV (Curriculum Vitae), cover letter and statement of philosophy to provide you with actionable feedback to strengthen your applications.

*There is no guarantee of a job as a result of my feedback or comments.

I have signed up for a class but my computer is broken or I am not able to connect online, can I have a refund?

If you have booked and paid for a class but your computer is broken there will be no refund. We recommend checking your electronics before signing up to a workshop to avoid this scenario.

I have signed up for a class but I am unable to make it, can I switch to another date?

If another workshop date has been advertised and there is availability,  we will try to accommodate you as we know that life happens sometimes, however there is no guarantee. If you signed up for a class, we hope you will be able to attend.

My workshop was cancelled by Foundations and Futures, will I get a refund?

If the workshop was cancelled by us, Foundations and Futures, then a full refund will be issued to you. Please allow 2 weeks for the refund to be processed.
